When the Detroit Lions sent LaAdrian Waddle packing Tuesday, the move was more than a bit shocking.

This season, Waddle had struggled,Cheap San Francisco 49ers Jerseys but he was still a young, capable body in an offensive line that has sustained plenty of injury and change this season. Last season, he had been one of Detroit's more consistent tackles and had certainly gotten his career off to a nice start.

Injury, however, derailed that, and Waddle wasn't the player he had been in the past this year. When he entered the game two weeks ago in exchange for Michael Ola, the offense stalled and the line play regressed. That's been true for the line as a whole, as they have contributed to more losses than wins this season.

Wednesday, Waddle was quickly scooped up by the New England Patriots.

Detroit hasn't been able to run the ball, nor have they been able to protect the passer, allowing 35 sacks on the season. They've seen mistakes, such as the errant snap Sunday by Travis Swanson, come to define their season. Thus, it comes as no surprise that changes, in some form, are coming.

Tuesday, the Lions also signed Gabe Ikard, a player who slots in at center and guard, continuing the shuffle further.San Francisco 49ers Jerseys Cheap They've already gotten good results from Ola, and might be inclined to try Ikard somewhere along the like as well.

Expect change to be the theme as the offseason pushes forward day by day. The first order of business that the new front office and staff will have to undertake is deciding who stays and who goes along the line. The next three games will provide a roadmap to that, and will allow the players -- both new and old -- to get their tape out there.

The Lions figure to be in the market for more young offensive linemen next May, and any team overhaul likely begins there, given the blockers haven't given Matthew Stafford much of a chance in his young career to be consistent. The offensive line's reconstruction could be the biggest key toward getting Detroit back to contention status.

Call this week's moves a good first step, but a mere first step only.
